The rare 50p coin sells for £790 and there are more to be found

A very rare 50p coin has sold on eBay for an incredible £790 after a bidding war. The coin depicts the Gruffalo from the 2019 children’s book.

The coin was struck in 22 karat gold and only 600 of the limited edition coins were produced. Royal Mint lists the coin for £1,020 on its website. The part is currently not in stock.

Last week an eBay seller received £790 for his after the listing started a 30-way bidding war. The item was listed as “The Gruffalo 2019 UK 50p Gold Proof Coin Very Rare Limited 600 ONLY MADE…MINT”.

Starting at a starting price of just £0.99, bidding jumped quickly. The coin was sold for 1580 times its face value.

The Royal Gruffalo Mint

It’s always worth checking your change for some of the rarest coins in circulation in the UK. Earlier this month, one lucky person sold a rare 50p coin for £175.

The coin was launched in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759 and the Royal Mint estimates around 210,000 have been minted. It features the famous Chinese Pagoda of the Royal Botanic Garden on the tail side with the Queen’s face as usual on the other.

If you find a Kew Gardens 50p in your change, the first thing to do is check the date. Indeed, the Royal Mint reissued a batch of coins in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p – and this release isn’t worth as much.

But you could still have an exciting payday if you find one, as they can sell for £70-80 on eBay.
